ThinNet Ethernet (BNC)

Thin Ethernet, also known as ThinNet, BNC, or Thin Wire was introduced to simplify the cabling of office or departmental LANs.  Compared to standard thick Ethernet, thin Ethernet coax cabling is more economical and provides the ability to make easier workstation moves, changes and additions.  The simplest and most economical approach to thin Ethernet cabling is to daisy chain the network interface cards (NICs) using BNC ìTî connectors.  Although very dependable, this cabling method is not the most adaptable to change.  Whenever a workstation is added or moved, the entire network cable segment must be shut down until the change is complete.  This approach is also not aesthetically appealing in an office environment, because each PC must have two separate cables and a ìTî connector attached to its NIC.  To avoid these problems, choose the ThinNet Tap or the Daisy Switch wall plate for your installation.  Both allow you to add and remove workstations without affecting other users on the network.  Further, both run only a single drop cable assembly from the wall to the NIC, maintaining the daisy chain without extra cabling clutter.  If your cabling requires clusters of workstations where wall plates are not appropriate, restricting the use of the ThinNet Tap or Daisy Switch, then choose the Self-Terminating ThinNet Drop Cable.  Termination is never a problem, since the cable automatically self terminates when used on the last device on the cable segment.  In addition, the Self-Terminating ThinNet Drop cable extends the ìTî off the back of the PC to the backbone, minimizing clutter at the PC.
