ThickNet Ethernet
When originally developed, the Ethernet networking standard called for a thick Ethernet coax trunk or backbone cable to be run wherever network devices were to be located. To connect a device to the network, a transceiver was attached to the backbone, and a transceiver drop cable was then run from the transceiver to the device. When the introduction of ThinWire Ethernet and 10 BASE T, the use of thick Ethernet for networking individual workstations greatly diminished. In todayís Ethernet environment, thick Ethernet cable primarily serves as a common medium for connecting various individual LAN segments together. The ability to support multiple topologies and cabling types adds to thick Ethernetís versatility. By running a thick Ethernet backbone throughout the central areas of a large building, you and interconnect multiple 10 BASE T and ThinWire cable segments by simply attaching each of them to the same thick Ethernet backbone through a bridge or repeater. In addition, the ability to connect various devices to the thick Ethernet backbone adds to the flexibility you can achieve with this cabling scheme. For example, terminal servers and hubs can directly access a DEC VAX that is attached to the same backbone. A backbone cable often runs in dropped ceiling and in vertical risersóareas where interference from fluorescent lighting and electrical motors could cause problems with other types of cable. Thick Ethernet cabling, however, has 4 layers of shielding, providing high resistance to interference. This characteristic not only makes it the perfect choice for backbone cabling, but also for networking individual workstations in electrically noisy environments.
