Switched 10 Base T/100 Base TX Ethernet

Nobody wants to throw away LAN hardware that still works, but when your shared-medial 10 BASE T LAN performances begins to degrade due to collision caused by too many users and too much traffic, you have to do something.  The solution shown here cost effectively deploys Ethernet switching and Fast Ethernet into an existing 10 BASE T LAN.  It maximizes performance by embracing the new high speed technologies, yet preserves your investment in existing 10 BASE T hubs, NICs and cabling.  The heart of this solution is an affordable 10/100 Mbps Ethernet switch.  The switch features six switched 10 BASE T ports and a switched 100 BASE TX port.  Any port on the hubówhether 10 or 100 Mbpsócan connect to a hub or to a network interface card in a workstation or server.  Each port provides a dedicated 10 or 100 Mbps of bandwidth to the device to which it is connected.  In this solution, bandwidth-hungry clients, such as multimedia, graphics or CAD workstations, connect directly to 10 BASE T ports on the switch.  This ìprivate Ethernetî gives each of those clients their own unshared 10 Mbps of bandwidth.  Less demanding groups of users share 10 Mbps connections to the switch via 10 BASE T hubs.  In this scenario all clients share a group of four centralized PCI-bus servers.  To prevent server bottlenecks, each server has a 100 BASE TX adapter card.  All four servers share a 100 Mbps connection to the switch via 100 BASE TX hub.  100 BASE TX users 1-pair Category 5 UTP cable with the same EIA/TIA T568B pinning as 10 BASE T.  Since Category 5 UTP structured cabling systems have been widely installed over the past several years, you may already have the cable and connecting hardware in place and would only need new server NICs, a 100 BASE TX hub and a 10/100 Mbps switch to implement this solution.
