S/3X & AS/400 Using Standard Twinax
Although installations using unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable have become quite popular in recent years, there are still some advantages to using Twinax cable for System/3X and AS/400 connectivity. Twinax cable has long been recommended by IBM as the preferred method of wiring workstations and printers to the host, because of its proven reliability and dependability, even in the worst of environments. Unlike UTP cable, Twinax is double shielded. This shielding provides a high degree of immunity to electrical impulses commonly generated by fluorescent lights or electrical machinery. UTP cable is not shielded and may pick up stray electrical impulses, leading to data transmission problems. The daisy chain topology shown here is best suited for installation that, once completed, require few moves, changes, or additions. Work group clusters, often found in open office environments, are well suited for this type of cabling system. Various types of wallplates are available to aid in cable management and to reduce clutter behind the desk. Cable runs of up to 5000 feet, without the use of any type of signal booster, are possible using Twinax cable, making this a very cost effective cabling system when installed in a relatively unchanging environment.
