S/3X & AS/400 Using IBM Cabling System

System/3X and AS/400 connectivity can be accomplished using either unshielded twisted pair (UTP) or twinax cable.  A UTP star wired cabling system offers the ability to make changes to the system by simply moving a patch cord on a patch panel, while a twinax cable systems provides a high degree of immunity to electrical noise.  The cabling scheme shown here, however, offers the best of both twinax and UTP wired systems.  Based on the IBM cabling system, this scheme uses shielded twisted par cabling.  Since the cable is star wired to a distribution pane, movers, changes, and additions can be made by simply moving a patch cord on the distribution panel.  There is also a high degree of immunity to electrical noise, because the cable is shielded.  This cable system is able to support both Token Ring and 5250 type devices, so there is a great amount of flexibility when connecting the AS/400 to a Token Ring network.  By simply changing the attachment cables and devices at the equipment rack and the workstation, the existing cabling can be adapted to a variety of systems and interfaces such as 16 Mbps Token Ring, 10 BASE T Ethernet, RS-232 and RS-422.
