Remote Branch Office Voice/Data Connectivity
When you have a branch office located in a different city than your headquarters office, communication between the two sites is essential to you business. Modem, telephone, and fax calls are typically required on a daily basis and can be a significant operating expense. This solution offers a way to reduce site-to-site communication costs for many organizations. It uses a pair of 4-in-1 Data/Voice Muxes (DVMs), which links the two sites over one 56k digital leased line. At the headquarters, the 4-in-1 DVM connects to an Async Stat Mux from a host computer via Terminal Server and to two trunk lines off a PBX. Featuring a built-in 56k CSU/DSU, the DVM multiplexes the data and voice channels right onto the 56k DDS line. At the branch office, the 4-in-1 DVM multiplexes the data channel to another Async Stat Mux, which breaks out the terminals, and the voice channels to two trunk lines off another PBX. Now anyone at either site can call anyone at the other site simply by dialing an extensionójust as if they were all in the same building. You can also connect fax machines to the PBXs, but models of the DVM that support direct connection of telephones and fax machines instead of PBX trunk lines are available. For WAN connectivity, the 4-in-1 DVM can connect to a bridge/router with an RS-232 interface. Its maximum data rate of 19.2k may, however, be too slow for LAN users. The 2-in-1 DVM supports a higher data rate and would be a better choice for WAN use. While it is not the answer to every branch-communication application, the solution can be very elective for organizations with small branch offices and data rates of 19.2 kbps or lower.
