FDDI Networking With LAN Switching

The rise of client/server computing has substantially increased desktop-to-server traffic, so that the 10 or 16 Mbps of bandwidth provided by 10 Base T or Token Ring may no longer be sufficient for may organizations.  Scrapping your investment in existing adapter cards, hubs, and cabling and installing FDDI to the desktop is certainly possible, but very expensive.  Further, 100 Mbps to the desktop is probably not even necessary for most companies.  The solution here provides a compromise, marrying existing hardware at the desktop with new FDDI hardware at the shared file serversóthe only place 100 Mbps of bandwidth is usually necessary.  It features an Ethernet switch; however, it could just as easily be a Token Ring switch with FDDI interface.  Just substitute Token Ring MSAUs and adapters for the 10 BASE T hubs and adapters.  The Ethernet switch maximizes the available bandwidth by logically segmenting the network into workgroups, each with a dedicated 10 Mbps of bandwidth.  Its high-speed backplane provides 100 Mbps switching between segments.  You can even create ìprivate Ethernetî by connecting a single workstation directly to one of the switchís 10 BASE T ports.  The FDDI hub featured in this solution offers a modular design, consisting of a chassis that accepts a variety of modules, so you can expand as your network grows.  Because the FDDI hub, Ethernet switch, 10 BASE T hubs and FDDI adapters used in this solution all support SNMP, the entire LAN is manageable from an SNMP-based management station anywhere on the network.
