Dial-up Access For Computers

Remember when the PC and the fax machine were introduced in the early 1980s?  At first they were novelties, regarded by many people with some amazementómixed with a little fear of the unknown.  But we soon became accustomed to these new productivity tools and began to wonder haw we ever managed without them.  Now, in the 2000s, itís the same with the Internet.  No more swapping voice-mail messagesówhy bother, when you can send and 3-mail instead.  And no more trips to the library or searching through stacks of old trade journals to find reference informationóitís all there at your fingertips on the World Wide Web.  This solution illustrates methods of economically connecting telecommuters and small office LANs to the Internet service provider (ISP) over dial-up analog or ISDN links.  At left, an individual PC user connects to the ISP via a standard V.34 dial-up modem.  In the ISPís office, a remote access server/modem rack consolidates remote access control and up to 32  V.43 dial-up modems in one convenient rack-mount unit.  At right, a small office LAN connects to the ISP via a Cisco 1605 Ramp.  This unique device combines the functions of a 10 Base T hub, ISDN NT1 and IP router or IP/IPX gateway all in one box.  It can be cascaded to other 10 Base T hubs to support Ethernet LANs up to 50 users.  In the ISPís office, multiple ISDN modems connect to the network via a TCP/IP terminal server.  Individual remote PC users could also use an ISDN modem to connect to the ISP via ISDN.
